š Size: H 74cm Ć Ć 32cm
This large, well-carved wooden block, known as a Tugeh (Sendi Tugeh), was traditionally used as a pillar base at the entrance of an open-walled pavilion, most likely within a temple compound. In Balinese architecture, these bases are both structural and symbolic, often adorned with intricate carvings that reflect spiritual beliefs and protective energies.
This piece features a dragon and a deer, representing cosmic balance and spiritual harmony in Balinese tradition. The dragon, a guardian figure, coils around the deer, which symbolizes peace and purity. Carved from jackfruit wood, its fine grain, durability, and golden hue have aged beautifully over time. Dating back to the 1950s or 60s, this sculpture embodies the refined craftsmanship of Balinese artisans, preserving sacred narratives through intricate detailing.
